About this site

Cost Per Use answers one shape of question, for household things, in the UK: what does this cost me each time I use it.

It exists because that question is surprisingly hard to answer well. Manufacturers quote annual figures against test cycles nobody runs. Comparison articles repeat each other's round numbers until the original source is untraceable. Both leave out the purchase price, which for anything used rarely is most of the cost.

So every figure here is calculated rather than quoted, from a small number of stated inputs, with the working printed next to the answer. When we have used an assumption rather than a measurement, the page says which. When an assumption is doing more work than the energy price is, the page says that too.

Who writes it

Cost Per Use is a small independent site, published from the UK. It is not owned by a retailer, an energy supplier or a manufacturer, and nobody pays to be included in a comparison or ranked higher in one.

How it pays for itself

Some links to retailers are affiliate links, which earn a commission if you buy. That never changes a price you pay and it never changes which product comes out cheapest, because the ranking falls out of the arithmetic before any link is attached to it. The affiliate disclosure sets this out in full.

Corrections

If a figure here is wrong, it should be fixed rather than defended. Point at it on the contact page and say which number and why, and it gets checked. Corrections are made to the page itself and the check date moves with them.
