Air fryer running cost vs oven, per meal

An air fryer is cheaper to run than an oven, which everybody already knows. What almost nobody publishes is where that stops being true, because an air fryer basket holds about two portions and an oven holds six. Cooking for one, the air fryer wins by 51%. Cooking for five, it loses.

The answer, before anything else

Cooking one or two portions, an air fryer costs about half what the oven costs. That gap closes as you add people, because the air fryer has to run again and the oven does not. Past four portions the oven is the cheaper machine.

The reason is preheat and capacity, not efficiency. An oven spends a large fixed amount of energy getting hot and then very little holding temperature, so its cost is nearly flat no matter how full it is. An air fryer spends almost nothing getting hot but has to repeat the whole cook for every basket.

Both figures are a rated power multiplied by a running time and a duty cycle, because that is the only honest way to do this without a plug-in meter on one specific model. Every input is stated so you can disagree with a particular one rather than with the answer.

A 2.1kW electric fan oven. Ten minutes of preheat at full draw, then a 25 minute cook with the thermostat holding temperature at roughly 60% duty. The oven draws the same whether there is one tray in it or two.

The duty cycle is the part most likely to be wrong, and it is the part almost every article on this subject leaves out. A 2.1kW oven does not draw 2.1kW for an hour. It draws it while heating, then the thermostat cuts the element in and out to hold temperature. If your oven is older, badly sealed or set higher, its duty will be worse than the 60% assumed here and the oven will look worse.

The break even is a household size, not a number of years

Most cost per use questions on this site resolve to how often you use a thing. This one resolves to how many people you cook for at once, which is unusual and is why the usual advice is unreliable. A single person and a family of five get the same recommendation, about two machines that behave completely differently for each of them.

The honest caveat

Two portions is a real basket, not a generous one. Bigger dual-basket air fryers hold four and shift the break even up by about two portions, but they also draw closer to 2.4kW, so the cost per batch rises with the capacity. The shape of the answer does not change: there is always a batch count where the oven wins.

What about the machine itself

Running cost is only part of it. An air fryer is a purchase you would not otherwise make, and an oven is already in the kitchen and already paid for, which matters if you are deciding whether to buy rather than which to switch on.

Bought at the middle of the range and used a few times a week, the air fryer adds a real amount to every meal before a single unit of electricity is counted. The energy saving articles never include that figure, and on a machine used twice a week it is bigger than the electricity.

So the saving is real but it is a running saving, and it takes a while to pay back the thing that produces it. Used for two portions daily, the electricity saved is 11.7p a meal, which pays back a £125 air fryer in about 2.9 years. Used twice a week, it does not pay back inside its likely life.

Things that change the answer more than the machine does

  • Not preheating the oven. For chips and anything frozen it makes very little difference to the result and removes 0.35kWh, which is most of the oven's disadvantage at small portion counts.
  • Cooking two things at once in the oven. The oven's cost is nearly fixed, so a second tray is close to free. This is the single largest saving available and it costs nothing.
  • Your tariff. Everything here is priced at the capped rate. On an off-peak rate at around 7p per kWh, every figure on this page falls by roughly three quarters and the ranking between the two machines stays exactly the same.
  • The size of the air fryer. A bigger basket raises the cost per batch but cuts the number of batches, and those two effects very nearly cancel until you exceed its capacity.

The verdict

If you cook for one or two, the air fryer is genuinely cheaper to run and the saving is worth having. If you cook for four or more in one sitting, you are running the small machine repeatedly to avoid running the big machine once, and the arithmetic stops supporting you. If you already own both, the useful rule is the simplest one available: use whichever machine you can fill.

Is an air fryer cheaper than an oven?

For one or two portions, yes, by about 51%. For five or more portions cooked at once, no, because the air fryer has to run multiple batches while the oven cooks it all in one.

How much does it cost to run an air fryer for 20 minutes?

About 9.1p for a 1.5kW model at the current capped rate of 26.11p per kWh, or 11.1p including the three minute preheat from cold.

Does an air fryer use less electricity than an oven?

Per cook, yes. A single air fryer batch uses about 0.42kWh against 0.88kWh for an oven session including preheat. Per portion it depends entirely on how many portions you are cooking.

Do I need to preheat an air fryer?

For most frozen food, no, and skipping it saves about 0.08kWh per session. Preheating matters more for things you want seared rather than heated through.

How long does it take an air fryer to pay for itself?
